Due to the state of the housing industry, many out of work construction companies, handymen, jack-of-all-trades, and anyone who can swing a hammer, have become "basement finishing experts" overnight and are jumping in to the field by offering ridiculously low, cut-rate pricing. First of all, everyone needs to make a living, so we wish everyone only the best. However, homeowners need to be very diligent and understand that most legitimate basement finishing companies will usually be in the same ballpark pricewise. We all pay the same for materials, and our labor costs are always going to be very close as well. Therefore, when someone comes into your home and offers to do a scope of work that is drastically lower than previous estimates from established basement finishing companies, that should raise some red flags! Something isn't right here...
Since we all pay about the same for materials and labor, the only way to cut significant amounts of money is to do LESS work, purchase LESS materials, or submit an estimate that is TOO LOW and ask for more money later on in the project. I've personally heard one story after another the past several months, and it's always the same: A homeowner gets several bids, and one that is much, much lower. Of course, they hire that contractor to save money. After a couple of weeks, that contractor either A) leaves the job after getting some money or B) asks for much more money that was agreed upon. And, this doesn't even address the topic of the quality of the work, standing behind the work, and treating the basement concrete for moisture (failure to do this one step will result in mold and mildew in just a few years time).
